Day-1 Play— Ride the institutional surge on gap day
The highest-frequency setup. Enter on the gap day itself when volume confirms institutional buying and the close holds at or above the open.
Timing
Gap day (day 0)
Conditions
- ›Volume ≥ 1.0× the 50-day average (Highly Significant)
- ›Close finishes at or above the opening price
Entry
Buy at or near the gap-day close. The stock must close at or above its open — this confirms buyers controlled the session.
Stop Loss
Gap-day low. If price breaches the low of the gap candle, the institutional bid is gone.
Exit / Target
Trail the stop upward as the position extends. Exit if price closes below the gap-day low (converts to a Failed Gap). Initial target: the gap magnitude measured from the close (e.g., a 10% gap → ~10% upside target).
Consolidation Entry— Buy the breakout from a post-gap base
After the initial gap, price digests gains in a narrow range. Enter on a breakout above the range high with volume confirmation.
Timing
Days 2–20 post-gap
Conditions
- ›Recent sessions form a tight range (< 8% high-to-low width)
- ›Breakout: daily close above the consolidation range high
Entry
Buy on a daily close above the range high. Look for above-average volume to confirm the breakout is genuine.
Stop Loss
Consolidation range low, or the gap-day low if that is higher.
Exit / Target
Target measured-move: add the consolidation range height to the breakout price. Exit if price falls back inside the range (failed breakout).
10-EMA Pullback— Buy the dip to the rising 10-day EMA
Post-gap momentum often pulls back to the 10-day EMA before continuing. Enter on the reclaim when volume picks up.
Timing
Days 2–10 post-gap
Conditions
- ›Price pulls back to within 1.5% of the 10-day EMA
- ›Stock reclaims the EMA (closes back above) on rising volume
Entry
Buy at the 10-EMA level when price reclaims it on increasing volume. This is a "buy the dip" entry for strong gaps that need a breather.
Stop Loss
Gap-day low. If that level breaks during the pullback, the setup converts to a Failed Gap.
Exit / Target
Trail the stop along the 10-EMA or use a trailing stop at 2× ATR. Exit if price loses the EMA on a closing basis.
Failed Gap— The gap has failed — exit and avoid
Price broke below the gap-day low, signalling the gap was driven by retail/FOMO rather than genuine institutional rerating. No new longs.
Timing
Any day ≥ 1 after the gap
Conditions
- ›Daily low breaks below the gap-day low
- ›The institutional bid that drove the gap has evaporated
Entry
No new long entries. Exit any existing position immediately. Aggressive traders may initiate a short with a tight stop at the gap-day high.
Stop Loss
For shorts: gap-day high. Respect the signal — the thesis is invalidated.
Exit / Target
Shorts: cover on a meaningful breakdown extension or if price reclaims the gap-day low. This is a risk-management signal, not a profit-play.
Pending— Aging gap — no tradeable setup yet
The gap hasn't failed, but no clear technical entry has formed either. The stock is in limbo between setups. Monitor for a breakout, EMA pullback, or failure.

> 1 day post-gap

- ›Gap is holding (price above gap-day low)
- ›No breakout, no EMA pullback, no consolidation forming
Entry
No entry until a setup triggers. Keep on the watchlist.
Stop Loss
Gap-day low remains the invalidation level.

Wait for the stock to either (a) consolidate and break out, (b) pull back to the 10-EMA, or (c) fail and break the gap-day low.
